Overconfident Women – Memoir 8
I remember performing for one of the most prominent managers and musicians in our area. This individual had managed numerous celebrities and owned a recording studio. After rehearsing intensely for a day, we felt prepared and confident as we headed to his studio. Upon arrival, he greeted us at the door and quickly ushered us into his office. After a brief conversation, he invited us to showcase our talent. We sang three songs consecutively with all our might.
As soon as we finished, our social anxieties surged, and without waiting for his feedback, we hurriedly thanked him and left the studio. Once in the car, we immediately began debriefing, asking each other, "Were you nervous?" We both admitted to our nerves with a sigh of relief and started heading home.
Unexpectedly, before we got home, he called to ask why we had left so fast. He shared that he usually had to prompt singers to leave, noting that some had even jumped on tables to catch his attention. He found it amusing and unprecedented that we simply performed and left without lingering for his approval. He was intrigued by our apparent overconfidence, assuming we must have been supremely confident to just sing and walk out. He ended the call by affirming that we had something special. We laughed, thrilled that he appreciated our performance, never guessing that behind our swift exit were two introverts with a bad case of social anxiety.

Understanding Your Personality – Memoir 11
During a team meeting, we participated in an exercise involving a series of personality questions spread across five sections, each containing ten questions. After answering each section, we tallied our points, and at the end, the total points indicated our personality type. The exercise was designed to better understand our coworkers and explore diverse approaches to teamwork and task completion. While it was no surprise to me that I was categorized as an introvert, I was intrigued to find that many of my eloquent coworkers were also introverts. This revelation helped me recognize that not all introverts struggle with social anxiety. Social anxiety can exacerbate the challenges of introversion, as it is a clinical issue that requires distinct handling.
My struggle with being perceived as less competent in group settings due to my inability to express myself has been significant, highlighting the impact of social anxiety on my professional interactions.
